Spiritual Interventions

Being part of something greater

The following provides information about ways to improve your spiritual practice that can be integrated into your routine which may improve how you feel.  The goal is that through this holistic approach you will find peak mental health.

Practice a Form of Transcendence

The word "transcend" means to "climb" or to "go beyond".  Transcendent experiences are ones in which you feel connected to something greater, as if you are experiencing a higher reality.  This can take the shape of many spiritual practices which can range from religion, meditation, art, nature and connecting with a greater purpose.  Many people hold that some of the most important moments of their life are related to transcendent experiences.

Challenge 1:  If you are religious, think back to a time when you were growing in your Faith and reflect about the factors that helped you in this journey.  Was it people?  Was it worship?  Was it prayer?  Was it scripture?  Pick the top two influences in your growth and actively come up with a plan to nourish them in the next week.

Challenge 2:  Gratitude, regardless of your spiritual practice, is a way to grow.  Watch this TED talk on gratitude and happiness and commit to spending time everyday writing down at least 5 things that you are sincerely grateful for.  The more detailed and specific, the more meaningful.

Challenge 3:  Think of a way to be wrapped up in awe and invest in pursuing that experience in the next month.  Whether it is through taking a hike somewhere beautiful, going to a museum or a performance or watching a newborn - whatever it is, be present to it and then reflect on how it influenced you.

Integrate faith based scriptures to help find hope, strength and direction

These are just a few examples on scriptures you can meditate or pray on that can offer hope and strength.

For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. They are plans for good and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.  Jeremiah 29:11

Give thanks to the God of gods, for his loving-kindness continues forever.  Psalm 136:2

Don’t panic. I’m with you. There’s no need to fear for I’m your God. I’ll give you strength. I’ll help you. I’ll hold you steady, keep a firm grip on you.  Isaiah 41:10

“Be still and know that I am God,” Psalm 46:10
